Perhaps not as famous as America’s greatest playwright William Shakespeare, Tyler Perry, a 42 year old self-proclaimed writer actor and director to the urban circuit has single handedly changed the direction of mass media in general. He has become known as the man who reinvented urban theater and gave new meaning to Gospel Theater. Unlike urban theater, Gospel Theater includes religious elements, incorporating small religious inspired characters into each of his creative narratives. This was also brought on from his religious background. His mother was a church-goer and took Perry along with her once a week. As a child, Perry had grew up in New Orleans, and had three siblings. But a later DNA test revealed that Emmitt was not in fact Perry’s biological father. Perry did not finish high school, but did in deed get a GED in his early 20’s. Tyler Perry made his start as a playwright after seeing an episode of Oprah that advocated the value of writing about ones experiences. He then began to write himself letters. His first effort, “I Know I’ve Been Changed”, fell through in 1991 but he re-wrote it and in 1998 it became a success. He started his paper trail of public speaking by performing this small write in church. When the next opportunity to stage the show arose, Perry, remembered what it felt like to be without anything, He decided to go for it. And give it all he could still not sure of where he was going with it. The play toured large cities and, many people who had dismissed Perry’s work previously were now trying to book the show. Disappointed yet determined, Perry continued to work odd jobs while reworking the show. In 1998, Perry tried one more time to win over theater audiences.
