In the black community, there are a lot of issues that have yet to be solved. If you are not black or do not live in a predominantly black neighborhood, they only ways you would be able to see these issues is through media, protests, or word of mouth. Often the image of black people is ruined by the media. To be quite honest a lot of the time the “media” reporting or portraying black issues do not consist of many black people in charge of the material being produced. Like how BET is run by a white man, or when white news reporters report on Black Movements driven by opinion. Abuse is still the leading cause of death among black women ages 15-24. In addition, black women are 35 percent more likely to get abused than white women. The worst part about abuse is the numbers are probably way higher than reported. Domestic Violence is much more than just being hit. When in an abusive relationship, the victim feels as though their rights are stripped away. The abuser forces the victim to feel dependent on them in every aspect financially, emotionally, physically, and mentally. Typically the victim will endure everything in fear of it continuing or going to far, breaking the family apart, or reporting it to the police and they do nothing about it. In addition, there are a few instances where the abuser is wealthy and the victim was not as fortunate before they met, so they are faced with an ultimatum of staying or leaving with nothing. This was partly the case in the play. Helen McCarter was a very caring wife of 20 years to Charles McCarter. The play opens up with Helen, Helen’s friend Brenda, and Charles’ Father Daddy Charles. They begin to converse about all sorts of topic, all seeming to relate to Charles. Soon after Helen’s mother, Myrtle, comes in and they talk for a bit. Helen seems worried that Charles has lost interest in her. She begins to talk about bringing a baby in the relationship to make him happy.
