There are public health intervention programs that were created to help raise awareness of the Type 1 Diabetes crisis. For example, the American Diabetes Association held a November awareness month and an alert day to advocate for diabetes (adada). The main purpose is to alert people and encourage them to get tested to see if they are at risk of developing the disease. Early detection and prevention of diabetes is beneficial because it could slow the development of the actual disease. The awareness also touches upon the concept of changing to healthier eating habits, as well as, exercising to lower one's risk. The program found that people who are educated are more likely to make positive changes to their diet and physical activity levels, as well as, increase the involvement and support from family and friends. In addition, the program is accessible to many in community centers, schools, and worksites (Dia). This program not only teaches people more about the disease they have and how to better manage it, it also allows family and friends to be supportive of those who are fighting the disease and to better their health. The problem of Type 1 Diabetes is not solved, however, there are many programs and organizations outside of the United States that also works towards raising awareness, as well as, conducting research for a cure and other treatments of diabetes. For instance, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a Type 1 Diabetes charity based in the UK that funds research, treatment, and prevention of the disease, campaign on the issues affecting people and families with Type 1 Diabetes, and provide information and support to patients and their families (cite).
