The UAB men’s tennis team started their season last weekend in the Dale Short Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In their first match, UAB faced off against the Austin Peay State Governors on Friday, Sept. 22. The Blazers started singles play with a win by UAB’s Giovani Pasini defeating APSU’s Chad Woodhams 6-0, 6-1. UAB’s Stefan Gonzalez then defeated Aleh Drobysh of APSU 6-2, 6-0. UAB continued the hot singles start with a win from Kenton Parton over the Governors’ Jacob Lorino 6-3, 6-1. UAB’s Tim Dollman defeated Christian Edison of APSU 6-0, 6-3. The Blazers’ Nikolai Manchev beat APSU’s Timo Kiesslich 6-4, 6-3. APSU would get one singles win with Almantas Ozelis beating UAB’s Anru Fourie 7-6 (4), 7-5. On Saturday afternoon, UAB faced the Lipscomb Bisons. In singles, UAB’s Marlon Goering defeated David Skrabut of Lipscomb 6-1, 6-4. The Blazers’ Parton beat LU’s George Wong 6-4, 6-4. In the third singles set UAB continued to dominate with a win by Dollman defeating the Bisons’ Victor Chaw 7-5, 6-3. UAB’s Pasini defeated Pedro Uribe 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Lipscomb would gain one singles victory as Daniel Cardenas defeated Fourie of UAB 6-2, 4-6, 3-6. UAB ended singles on a high note with Gonzalez deafeating Jorge Ortegon of Lipscomb 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4). In doubles, UAB started with a win by Manchev/Paiste over Wong/Skrabut 6-2. Lipscomb’s Cardenas/Uribe beat Fourie/Pasini of UAB 6-3 in the second doubles set. UAB would win the doubles point on a Dollman/Gonzalez win over Chaw/Ortegon 7-5, 6-3. With the help of the five singles wins and the doubles point, UAB won the match 6-1. The Blazers were led by Dollman who went 3-0 in singles in straight sets. Dollman also won all three of his doubles matches with Gonzalez. Gonzalez went 2-1 on the weekend in singles
