Modern society’s dependence on computing resources have made information technology more vulnerable to unethical behavior related to information systems. This has led various organizations like professional IT bodies, universities, etc. to formulate ethical codes and professional conduct expected from its employees, professionals, students or anyone who is directly or indirectly part of the organization. To maintain the security of computing resources and to keep a check on ethical behavior, implementation of policies and standards has become very important. The computing resources at University at Buffalo support different department activities like research, administrative, educational and instructional and access to all these resources are provided to all the members of the university. As a student at UB, I am privileged to make use of many computing resources pertaining to software licenses, library, servers, databases and the Internet. For this, I am obligated to be well aware of policies and standards of the University to comply with computing resources security. One of the most important security policies that applies to me as a student is the UBIT name account and password. This goals of this policy is to define who is eligible for a UBIT Name, what happens when a person’s affiliation to the University changes, conditions that allow for a UBIT Name to be changed, and how a UBIT Name can be created for administrative purposes. The policy also states that me as a student should not share my UBIT name and password to other people so that they do not have access to my emails, data or other files and also should not lead to slandering and harassing any other person. Any compromise of authentication credentials used by the university community impacts the confidentiality and integrity of university IT systems and information. The standard that is associated with UBIT Name policy is UBIT password that states to create strong passwords and secure and to protect their university passwords. According to the policy “UB passwords are considered to be regulated, private data. It should not be revealed over the phone to anyone or over an email or to a supervisor.
