UCC Assignment: Abortion Abortion has been a moral dilemma and issue for many years. An abortion is when a woman decides to end a pregnancy before it results in a child. It is also often referred to as “termination of pregnancy” (“Abortion Services” 1). Since Roe v. Wade in 1973 the issue of abortion has been debated and discussed by almost everyone. People who are against women having an abortion are referred to as “Pro-life” individuals, and those who are for the woman’s rights to her own body are called “Pro-choice.” Usually more liberal people are often pro-choice, while more conservative people are pro-life. Reasons for being “Pro-life” and “Pro-choice” can be seen and considered easily with an open mind. From a “Pro-life” point of view, abortion is often seen as wrong because it essentially the killing of a human being. Although this state of mind could be flawed because their judgment can become clouded and they may not see when a woman may be at risk. “Pro-choice” individuals, on the other hand, usually find nothing wrong with a woman wanting to get an abortion. Some may have different feelings depending on the circumstance, but overall they keep an open mind towards the woman’s feelings. The downside to this way of thinking, however, could cause conflict between them and a person basing their opinion on religion. The religious person could be disrespected because the “Pro-choice” person’s judgment may be just as clouded with their own opinions to be able to efficiently understand the other viewpoint. There is not a definite right or wrong answer when it comes to the terms of having an abortion. In her case, it is still her body and she has a right to that. In 1973 the Roe v. Wade law, which stated that prohibiting abortions is unconstitutional (“Abortion ProCon”), gave every woman in America the right to privacy and the right to make her own decisions for her body. The opposing side would say that she was just using the abortion as a form of birth control or that she may be doing it because it would be easier for her. In their eyes, it would not be justified. In pro-choice people’s opinion, she has the right to her own body; therefore making her choice of deciding for herself would be justified. Whether the girl wanted to keep it, put it up for adoption, or get an abortion she has the right to privacy to make her own
