Before going to UNLV, I thought I already had my whole career figured out, what I planned to do after college, and the major and classes that I wanted to take. However, something in me still felt like I wasn’t completely convinced on this career path I chose which happened to be Nursing. This is when I decided to apply to UNLV as an Exploring Majors student rather than a Nursing student in order to not only broaden my horizons about the different majors and possibilities UNLV has to offer, but to also make sure that I can be confident about the major I choose to go into. We were able to work on a variety of assignments that challenged us to research different majors from UNLV that we were contemplating about, and for a lot of us, it solidified our confused thoughts on the major we wanted pursue. I had decided to research more about the Hospitality industry and I found that it touched on a lot of the core values that I believed in and it had great work environments that I found appealing. Taking COLA 100E really changed my perspective on not only how majors and careers work, but it taught me how college life and classes work in general. For example, I learned as an Exploring Major that going into a certain major and earning a degree in that field does not automatically mean that you necessarily have to go into that career field. Even though It is normal to get a hospitality degree and go into the hotel business, I don’t necessarily have to and can go into any job that I choose to apply for. I also learned that not only is it normal to take different classes in order to try out a certain major, it is actually encouraged. Granted it’s not recommended to take more than two years to figure out a major, it is completely okay to take as long as you need
