An organizations’ mission and vision statements are major components in developing the strategic plan. The mission statement illustrates the general purpose and core, measurable intentions of the organization. It may be specific to a particular population, available services, healthcare market, and values (McNamara, n.d.). The vison statement is similar to the mission statement, but includes statements of direction for staff conduct and assists to provide staff motivation (Hawthorne, 2015). When staff feel involved with the process of the organizational strategic planning, the more likely they will be engaged and have greater levels of production. One of the main goals included implementing “One Chart”, an EpicCare Electronic Medical Record (EMR). UUHC IT encompassed a multitude of unrelated applications such as, General Electric (GE) EMR for the operating room (OR), and Radiology EMR, Anesthesiology EMR, Respiratory EMR, Cerner for the inpatient setting, and EpicCare Ambulatory for outpatient clinics. UUHC IT desired to provide clinicians and other ancillary staff, a single EMR to access all pertinent patient health information; including medical records from other EpicCare hospitals. The stated mission is three-fold, “provide compassionate care without compromise; educate scientists and healthcare professionals for the future; and engage in research to advance knowledge and well-being” (University of Utah Health Care, 2010, p. 5). It establishes the foundation for prioritizing, direction, focus, and objectives. The next step involves performing a valuation of the internal and external components that influence the strategic goals. There are various methods for assessment, such as the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis and Political, Economic, Social, Technology (PEST) analysis. SWOT analysis provides an opportunity to specifically correspond the organizations’ internal strengths and weaknesses with external opportunities and threats (McMillan, 2015). PEST analysis is a comprehensive outline for magnifying a SWOT analysis; topics included are governmental, regulatory, financial, societal, stances, demographics, and technical advances (CGMA, 2015). The new mission statement is to provide exceptional care for patients and enhance academic opportunities through research and technology.
