“Whatever hysteria exists is inflamed by mystery, suspicion, and secrecy. Hard and exact facts will cool it.” This quote, by Elia Kazan, refers to the Salem Witch trials and the recent mass hysteria, UFO’s, because facts calm down these hysterias made up by people. In today’s society, one mass hysteria of the world today is UFO’s. No one really knows if UFO’s are real, but a lot people think that they could be. The main reason why the justice system is corrupt in Salem is that the people who were guilty, had to prove their innocence. That is not like in other courts where the people who accuse the guilty need to prove why those people are guilty. This shows that if the justice system is ran the right way, Abigail and the girls would have to prove why all those people were witches. This would have led to a lot less deaths, including John’s death. Another reason why John cheating on Elizabeth lead to his death, is that he tried to use his excuse of cheating on his Elizabeth, to get her out of her hanging. When John went against the court, he told everyone in the court that Abigail is doing this because he committed adultery with her. He told Judge Danforth to ask his wife if he cheated because Elizabeth never lies, but Elizabeth lied to save John’s reputation. Elizabeth had no idea that John told the court he committed adultery to save her. This shows that John is lying about cheating on Elizabeth, which he did cheat on her, and it got him sent to jail and his hanging.
