In Scott Westerfeld's novel, Uglies, the antagonist Dr. Cable is an evil and malicious woman. Dr. Cable, head of special circumstances, a special government agency that does genetic and experimental operations. In this novel, the protagonist Tally lives in a world where when you turn 16 you get surgery to become pretty. Cable is not a good person and ideas are not beneficial to society at all. Dr. Cable is not a hero due to the fact that she is dishonest, manipulative and abuses her power. Abusing power is most definitely not a heroic trait, Dr. Cable has actively demonstrated this characteristic on numerous occasions throughout this novel, ultimately proving that she is not a hero. Westerfield states, “The buildings had the look of a burned-out campfire, smoking, crumbling, blackened through and through’’ (Westerfield 312). This statement illuminates the fact that Dr. Cable and the specials had burned down the smoke, leaving nothing but a smoldering mess behind. Dr. Cable uses her authority and power to further her agenda without ever thinking twice or considering who or what she might hurt in the process. Proving she doesn't care about others and therefore should not be in a position of power. In the novel David states, “Dr. Cable wanted to turn them all, but she was worried that mom and dad might talk about the brain lesions [...] Dr. Cable was already working on ways to change memories, a way of erasing the smoke forever from people's minds.
