In Ukraine, over five million people are currently living in a war zone. The lives of these people have been in danger for the past two years, due to the civil war, which has taken over the eastern half of the country. The Ukrainian conflict started when the Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovich made a decision in an attempt to improve Ukraine’s economy. Yanukovich’s decision was between Europe and Russia, both of which had proposed a deal. The European nations proposed the Ukraine-European Union Associations Agreements, and Russia suggested that Ukraine become part of the Eurasian Customs Union. This angered the people who wanted to ally with Europe and caused them to riot in protest of Yanukovych’s decision. Riots quickly became more violent and escalated into a full-pledged coup-d’etat. Yanukovych fled to Russia which led to Petro Poroshenko becoming president. Poroshenko did not agree with Yanukovich's decision, which caused pro-Russian protests and riots to break out in the East. This was followed by the Crimean peninsula voting in favor of leaving Ukraine and joining Russian Federation, which it was a part of until 1954. This was seen as a threat by the Ukrainian government and escalated the tensions between the two countries. During March of this year, Britain signed a 15 year agreement with Ukraine to help train its troops and help defend their territory against separatists. There will be more conjoined operations between Ukraine and Britain in the future. The agreement also discusses the intelligence which they will share as well as expertise and knowledge all it effort to improve the army and troops. The U.S. has considered sending troops to Ukraine but due to President Obama’s belief in no longer involving U.S. troops in foreign affairs, the United States has refrained from doing so. Unlike the U.S. many other countries have become more involved in the conflict. During the 12 times the heads of France, Germany, Russia, and Ukraine met in Minsk to discuss what has to be done in order to stop the conflict, they agreed on ceasefires, and started dialogues between the two sides in attempt to make a peace agreement, but this fell through due to sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefires which are supposed to happen during the meetings in Minsk. Canada is also involved, it has sent two hundred troops into Ukraine to train troops and help prepare them for future conflicts with the pro-russian rebels. Canada also attempted to sell fighter jets to Ukraine but was not successful because the Ukrainian troops had not been trained to pilot advanced planes such as the ones Canada offered.
