“Let us have peace”, this quote by Ulysses S. Grant is short, powerful, and reflects his personality. Ulysses was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio on April 27th, 1822 one year after his birth he and his family moved to Georgetown, Ohio. His father was a tanner and a businessman and his mother, like most others point in time, didn’t work. He had a fairly uneventful childhood but he did show great natural skill as a horseman. Grant was shy and not very outgoing like his mother, he also didn’t want to be a tanner like his father was. Louis Missouri where he then met his future wife, Julia Dent. He proposed for marriage in 1844 but he was shipped off before they got married he was shipped off for duty in the Mexican American War. He served as a quartermaster during the war and he did well at overseeing the movements of supplies. During this time he closely observed the leaders and over time developed leadership skills. He was soon given the opportunity to lead a company into battle and was recognized for his bravery under fire. Finally after a 4 year engagement they were married in 1848 and over the next six years had four kids. Grant was then posted at Fort Vancouver and while there missed his family which led to a drinking problem, this hurt him because he developed a reputation that chased him his whole military career. But this could be expected for he had no political experience and he was only 46 when he was elected which was the youngest at the time. He did pass the ratification of the 15th bill and establish the National Parks Service but this was basically the only good thing he did during his presidency. Once his presidency was over he went back to civilian life which for him was not very successful. He went on to have a financial firm but it went bankrupt and so did he. The same year he went bankrupt he received news that he had throat cancer. He then began to write short magazine articles and negotiated a contract with famous novelist Mark Twain to publish his memoirs. His two book series then went on and sold around 300,000 copies and became an American classic. Sadly Ulysses passed away on July 23rd, 1885, just as his memoirs were being
