During the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant was a more successful general and was able to win many of the battles and was able to switch the War from Confederate dominance to Union dominance. Robert E. Lee was ranked 2nd in his class at Military college West Point in 1849. He had no demerits and was a very studious man. Not one to go to parties or to drink, while most did, including Future General Ulysses s. Grant. While Lee was studying and working hard to keep his grades up and learn as much possible, Grant would go out and drink at bars and have a fun time doing things he should not be doing.
Robert E, Lee served as a military officer in the U.S. Army, superintendent of West Point, and the incredible legend of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, but how did his success begin? In Virginia, Robert Edward Lee was born on January 19, 1807 being the fifth child of Harry Lee and his second wife. At West Point, Lee finished second in his class and was commissioned to the Corps of Engineers during the Mexican–American War. In addition, he served as a captain under General Winfield Scott. Since Lee was distinguished in the battles of Veracruz, Churubusco, Chapultepec, he was promoted to colonel.
Grant was a very prominent figure of the time period and led the Union to victory and helped heal the fractured United States afterward. General Grant began his military career at West Point when he was just sixteen. He was top of his class and when he graduated, he began his four years of service and went into combat in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to captain as a result of his bravery during the war. After this, his four-year commitment to the army was up, he left and did not expect to come back.
Ulysses Simpson Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. He was most known for his contribution in the Civil War as well as being one of the presidents of the United States. After starting at the bottom, Grant worked his way through the ranks of the military all the way to the top. Grant was promoted to the position of general of the Union Armies in March of 1869. After the Civil War, he was elected president in 1849.

However, while he may have been a prodigious general who won the Civil War for the Union, Grant was a substandard president. He won the Election of 1868 by a landslide after the highly unpopular Andrew Johnson’s retirement, and served two terms before retiring absolutely broke. As a president of both the historical Reconstruction Era and the Gilded Age, Grant was in a difficult position.

General Robert E. Lee built a relationship with his generals through trust as Commander in chief. By allowing the generals to conduct missions on his behalf without giving them orders. This allowed General Lee and his army to be felixable during the war. General Lee divided his army in to four divisions and expanded them out thourgh the battlefield. The plan was to have the bulk of his army to cross Chickahominy and attack the Union north position.
While he was posted at Fort Humboldt, California he his commander was Robert Buchanan who was still angry about their argument at West Point. Buchanan spent a lot of time spreading rumours of Grant’s drinking to try and destroy Grant’s career. Eventually, because of the malicious rumors Grant resigned from the army and tried to work several different jobs. In the end his job did not work out so when the Civil War broke out he rejoined the Union Army. Grant’s alcoholism was an attribute that actually made him a better leader.
Grant led the North to multiple victories during the Civil War and served as the 18th president of the United States. After great success in the Mexican-American War, Grant halted his time in the army, until the Civil War. His victories at Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Fort Donelson, and Fort Henry all showed Abraham Lincoln that Grant was capable of leading the Union. After General Lees’ army was left starving, and exhausted during the battle of Appomattox in Virginia, Lee surrendered to General Grant. This was important during the War because Grant was first Union general who had beaten Confederate leader Robert E. Lee.
George Washington led the continental army during the American Revolution in a remarkable win against the British. His excellent work in the war would lead him to become the first president of the United States of America. Washington began his military career during the French and Indian war and didn’t do a great job; his first mission was a complete embarrassment. Washington really came to light during the American Revolution, he was selected to lead the continental army. Washington and his men would define all odds and defeat the British.
General Lee chose to surrender to General Grant. Even though he surrendered, he was still a great general and leader. After all, both General Grant and General Lee were very good examples of what it meant to be superior leaders. They both fought hard, and led very appropriately. Both men symbolized characteristics of what it meant to be a good human leader.
