Did you know that the Civil War was the bloodiest battle that America had ever seen? It was fought in 23 states for about 4 years. The sound of giant cannons and the cries of wounded men was heard all across the eastern side of the United States. It all started so that slaves could be free. One of the most important people involved in the war was Ulysses S. Grant, the Lieutenant General in the Union Army. His many hard won battles and belief that everyone should be free helped secure victory for the Union Army. Grants leadership and military tactics were extraordinary. Grant started his rise to fame in war by going to a military academy. He trained at West Point, and upon graduation Grant decided to enter into combat serving in the Mexican War and later the Civil War. While serving in the Civil War, Grant had many battles, most of which were won. Some battles he won were the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Chattanooga, Fort Henry, and finally Fort Donelson (CivilWar.org). He most recalled battle was Vicksburg. This battle was like no other because Grant split his army in half strategically. Grant headed toward Vicksburg while he sent Sen. Grant’s victory over the Confederate army in Vicksburg started the end to the war. Shortly after the battle in Vicksburg, Robert E. Lee surrendered. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, and Grant met with him at the Appomattox Court House to discuss the surrender (CivilWar.org). All of Grant’s victories got closer and closer to the surrender of Lee.
