Prereading:
Today we are going to begin reading Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by K.G. Campbell. If you are not familiar with Kate DiCamillo, she has written many books that are available at our classroom library. Now, looking at the chapters of Flora & Ulysses, you will notice that they are very short and that some even contain comic strips. Now I know that some of you are familiar with comic books and that some of you have never read one. Therefore, I will read the first four pages so that you can get an idea of how to read comic strips. Then, I will begin the discussion on vocabulary and remind them to use contextual analysis, morphology, and sound reasoning to find the meaning of words. This will be followed by group discussions of unfamiliar words that they found in the reading. They will discuss unfamiliar words among their groups and vote on one or two words that are important for the understanding of the chapters. These words will be posted on the word wall, and I will include additional necessary words.
Next, I will give a mini-lesson on literary devices used in the book such as symbolism, tone, and mood. This will be followed by an explanation and examples of each of the literary devices. For instance, William Spiver’s temporary blindness symbolizes his refusal to see the truth: that his mother chose her husband over him.
