During his time in the Mexican-American War he had to lead troops into combat. Many people thought that Ulysses was brave for leading the troops into combat. He despised the war because he thought that if the Americans won, it would mainly be for the expansion of slavery. After four years he went back to marry Julia Dent. In six years Ulysses and Julia had four kids. During 1852 he was sent to Washington D.C, during this time it was called Fort Vancouver. He tried to bring the family closer to him but it did not work out. Since Ulysses did not get to spend time with his family he would usually drink on his free time.
