Louie Zamperini, never knowing which way is right or wrong, conquers everything thrown his way, and that forms him into an idol to his family and the world. Louie Zamperini, shaken, growing up he was an outsider, never really understanding what his calling was until, he became a runner. Having one of the fastest times in the world. His life was about to change. Laura Hillenbrand's best seller book, Unbroken, is a story based on soldier, father, and Olympic Runner, Louie Zamperini, he projects the characteristics of determination and resourcefulness in the story. Louie starts a daily ritual to persuade the men on the raft. “ Louie began describing the preparation of a dish, and all three men found it satisfying.”(114) Louie is trying to distract Phil and Mac. He is making them think about something besides the fact they have been on a raft for around twenty-days. Being determined made him survive longer, because he wants to survive not only to see his family, but to continue living life. Throughout all of his camps he has being held captive in, Naoetsu was the worst because his body was falling apart and mentally tortured everyday by the Bird. “Emaciated and seriously ill, Louie was commended to crawl on the ground, picking up feces and cramming handfuls of pig’s feed into his mouth to save himself from starving to death.”(206) Louie is right on the breaking point, his leg is injured and he got assigned a new job feeding the only life stock left in the camp. After Louie got transferred to the final camp, he realized his problems just got worse because days before the Bird was sent to a different camp which is now the same camp as Louie. Even though the Bird picks out Louie for examples, Louie still is determined through all the punishments. “His punishment: each enlisted man would punch each officer and theft in the face, with maximum force.” (209) Louie wasn’t going to let the Bird get the best of him. Being resourceful didn’t only help him but also Phil and Mac. “Curbing his anger, he told Mac, he was disappointed in him, but understanding that Mac had acted in panic, he assured him they would soon be rescued.” (108) Louie doesn’t want to be mad at Mac he just didn’t appreciate him eating all of the Chocolate, he wishes he didn’t because Mac could’ve live longer. But at the same time Louie is grateful because now he doesn’t have to rely on the Chocolate to make them survive. He can become the leader we all idolize. Being a leader for Mac and Phil wasn’t very easier, but doing this helped him become more resourceful and determined to survive. In fact, when Louie and the boys experienced an act by the Japanese bomber, Louie wasn’t going to let anyone die. “Four more times the Japanese strafed them, sending Louie into the water to kick and punch at the sharks.”(121) Louie thought it would be smarter to take cover in the water because they didn’t have anywhere else to hide and he knows that bullets slow down in water. Louie’s act was a resourceful choice because neither Mac nor Phil got injured. Additionally, the attack had affected one of the rafts but to save the other one, “Louie groped for the patching kit, and as Phil and Mac pumped and fought sharks, he began the laborious task of gluing patches on the bullet holes.” (122) Louie
