The United States was a untied country for the most part, however there were a few things that very much divided the North and South. Before the civil war, the North and South were divided socially, economically and politically. These topics had a huge impact on the development of the United States.
At this time there were a lot of social differences between North and South. A lot of the conflict between North and South had to do with their beliefs on slavery. The underground railroad was a network of people, many African American, that offered shelter and aid to help escaped slaves. Salves wanted to escape to the North in order to be free. The Abolition movement was an effort to end slavery in a nation and expressed the value of personal freedom. Southern States disagreed with this movement. South Carolina actually penalized anyone who brought written anti-slavery material into the state. Uncle Tom's cabin was novel written in 1852 by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe, which showed the reality of slavery. This novel is regarded as one of the major causes of the Civil War. In the South agriculture was the focus of the economy. Cotton was the most valuable export in the Southern areas. However, the Northern economy was based on manufacturing. The majority of the nation's manufacturing output came from the Northern states. The south also focused on slave labor while the North economy was based on free labor. One of the most important parts of the Industrial Revolution was the growth of railroads. Southern states preferred an agrarian living, while the Northern preferred the mechanical jobs. The Northern states has a lot more miles of tack than the Southern. A states' economy has an impact on how they interact with the ares around them and how their citizens
