Undara Lava Tubes

Introduction

Considered some of the largest and longest lava tubes on the planet. The Undara lava tubes is located in Undara Volcanic National Park in North Queensland. There is some of the most amazing spectacular underground caves. The coordinates of this amazing natural environment is, latitude: -18.25 and longitude 144.75.

Main Geological Features

A unique feature in Undara is called the wall. The wall is a continuous ridge for 40km. The wall rises 20 m above the basalt lava flows. The wall is an inflated lava flow, also called a lava-rise structure.

The temperature was estimated at around 1200°C. The lava tubes and cave were formed when lava flooded down to a confined valley, crusted over and formed a roof. The lava flow carried on for tens of kilometre, before draining out, Leaving an empty tube of lava which formed a lava tube. Weak sections of the roof of the lava tubes later collapsed that formed caves. There were more than 50 caves found in the Undara national park.
