From t-shirts to shoes, Nike has become the world’s top producer in athletic wear. Nike has competitors such as Under Armour, Adidas, Reebok, and others that produce similar clothing and athletic wear. One main competitor against Nike in the sportswear field is Under Armour. Under Armour produced its first major sale in 1996, bringing in around $17,000 in revenue. Over the years, Under Armour has created various products that are very similar to the products that Nike has been producing. Under Armour has progressed from just producing t-shirts to producing Olympic speed suits in 2010, redefined compression shirts (a change in material from the 1996 shirt) in 2011, cleats and women’s sports bras in 2012, and tennis shoes in 2013. The company sells its products to retail accounts, through Nike owned stores, internet websites, and licensees. Nike is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon and was founded by William Jay Bowerman and Philip H. Knight in January, 1964. Although Nike offers many different products, they really “hit it off” so to speak with basketball. Their basketball line-up includes its Brand Jordan which everyone knows through the famous and respected, Michael Jordan. The Jordan brand has its own division with the company and it designs, distributes, and licenses athletic and casual footwear, apparel, and accessories focused on basketball using the Jump-Man trademark. Along with the Jordan brand, the company offers many other products. Nike also is the holding company for Hurley LLC and Converse Inc. Apparel is the mainstream line for Nike, since they offer products for men, women, children, and toddlers. Nike has come to offer technologies such as sport watches that contain GPS sensors, Nike+ shoes that can be synced to your Apple iOS device, innovated shoes that contain technology to boost performance, and innovated shirts that help you adapt to the environment you are in and also boost performance. It is one of the biggest retailers of clothing, shoes, apparel, and anything else a person could imagine. Nike has competitors such as Adidas, Reebok, Puma, New Balance, and the list can keep going. Although Nike is on top compared to the rest of the companies, in a way they do have a control over the price. Nike has loyal customers that no matter the price they will still go with the Nike shoe. On February 9, 2014 Nike released a sneaker called the Air Yeezy 2 “Red Octobers”. The shoe was retailed at $245 and could only be bought online on the Nike store. In a matter of an astonishing 11 minutes the shoe was sold out. Some people that were able to obtain the shoe were reselling them for an amazingly high price. On EBay one pair of Red Octobers had reached 10 million pounds, which is nearly $16.4 million, and had 84 bids. Other people with the Red Octobers were auctioning off their pair from $2,000 to $12,300. This goes to show how in a way Nike has control over price because of their loyal customers.
