Hey guys, because of the message I put our case study through a couple plagiarism checkers and I've bolded the part we need to change. Under the Lions Paw was published in 1891 by Hamlin Garland. This short story was heavily influenced by Garlands personal life and experiences, which ultimately reflected the American Realism and Naturalism movements of the time. Hamlin Garland was born in West Salem, WI. He purchased an old homestead near West Salem, La Crosse County, where he returned each year for a part of the summer. In Iowa he learned what the rural school, the academy, and the farm could teach him. This education influenced his written works hat would be published in later years. A poor farmer and his family buy a farm from someone for a reasonable price. Three years the Haskins worked on the property putting their own money into it, turning it into a functioning farm (The rising actions begins). Once the three years is up, Butler came back. At first he seemed to be reasonable until they discussed how much the farm would cost them to continue purchasing the property. Without notice, Butler doubled the price of the farm making it too pricey for the Haskins family who is outraged. (The Climax of the story). Mr. Haskins almost kills Butler but is stopped by the laughter of his children. He breaks down and finally agrees to Butler price, who cowardly runs away (The falling action). This plot reflects the realism of the time period because the Haskins family was so easily taken advantage of. The title alone gave away to the corrupted capitalistic figureheads that ran the economy in the Midwest. Being under the lions paw meant that you had no control to your fate, essentially making you a puppet in someone's game. Mr. Butler symbolized corruption, he had power and he used it to weaken others. The story as a whole also represented the social structure with the poor being honest and hard working, while the upper class were cons and only were rich because they tricked and conned the poor. There were exceptions in history, not all rich people got their wealth from selfish ways by tricking the poor.
