The underground railroad was a secret escape system to help slaves escape from the South and into the North. In the South, African Americans were forced into slavery. They were living in unimaginable conditions, and in the north they are free. The underground railroad consisted of safe houses or “stations” where they could hide and move from house to house. Many abolitionists and former runaway slaves contributed to the railroad and the anti-slavery movement. African Americans were slaves in the South and free in the North. The abolitionist movement gave hope for the slaves to run away into freedom. Slaves escaped their masters on the secret route to the North, called the Underground railroad. The Underground Railroad had been around since the beginning of slavery. The railroad had multiple routes all leading into the Northern states, or even Canada. The Underground Railroad began in the 1680s but it did not become official until the Abolitionist movement became big. There had been a few safe houses and trails they could follow, but back then they were not coordinated or well known. Anti-Slavery societies were groups that assisted the railroad. Tubman went back into the South nineteen times to help other slaves escape from their miserable plantations. Tubman mostly worked in Maryland and Virginia, she spent ten years of her life taking dangerous journeys back into her nightmare to help the slaves.
