In the video writing across borders, Wayne Robertson brings into awareness the challenges that American teachers and international students experience in different colleges. Wayne’s objective is to assist teachers and international students, reduce some of the frustrations that both parties encounter in writing and communicating in academic forum. Wayne suggestion to American teachers especially those teaching English as a second language (ESL) is that they should be compassionate to international students who have been influenced by their different cultures. According to Wayne, if American teachers understand that students come from different political and cultural background, they will develop pedagogical skills that will reduce the worries of international students. Robertson Wayne in the video, samples the opinions of well renowned English teachers across the US and the problems faced by international students studying in America. In Vietnam, students may not risk citing material from any source apart from that of the professor. The Chinese student shares a similar opinion that, because of their collective life style, citation in writing is also collective and so, not an issue. She added that American professors insist on formatting, spacing, front size and page numbering, conversely, formatting in China is optional. One thing that challenges international students in the video is that the professors correct every tiny mistake as such, their papers look messy.
