Unemployment in Missouri A job, something many Missourians take for granted every day, is something many don’t. A job is more than something you do for a certain amount of hours each day, to many it is life support. Unemployment is something many missourians struggle with every year. Missouri has an unemployment rate of 5%. That is the 25th highest in the US. Missouri has improved on their unemployment rate since April of 2015. The unemployment rate in April of 2015 was 5.7%. In October of 2015, there were over 1800 unemployment claims filed. This is according to the Missouri department of labor. The total number of unemployed people in missouri is 303,200 people. This number is way higher than what it should be. Unemployment is not just a Missouri problem but a national problem. The national unemployment rate is 5.5%. The highest unemployment rates in the nation belong to California, with 6.7%, Nevada, with 7.1% in the west. In the east there is Tennessee and South Carolina, both at 6.6%, Louisiana at 6.7%, and Mississippi, at 7%. The lowest rates in the nation are in Nebraska, at 2.7%, North Dakota, at 2.9%, and Utah and South Dakota, at 3.4%. Even though Mississippi has one of the worst unemployment rates in the nation, the job growth there is essentially flat. In October 2015 Missouri added 1,400 jobs to their economy. In 2014 Missouri closed out the year with one the lowest unemployment rate since 2008. The unemployment rate then was just over 5.4%.
