Summary The United States has announced on Thursday that the US State Department decided to withdraw from the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization. UNESCO is responsible for coordinating international cooperation in education, science, culture and communication. It strengthens the ties between nations and societies. Each child and citizen has access to a quality education, may live in a cultural environment, can fully benefit from scientific advances, and can enjoy full freedom of expression. The State Department claimed that there was anti-Israel bias and the decision was not taken lightly. Now, Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said that Israel is also planning to withdraw from the organization. Benjamin Netanyahu has looked at the US move as a courageous and moral decision. The US wants to make a stand on what is said to be anti-Israel. The State Department said it would like to remain involved as a nonmember observer state. UNESCO is best known for its work to preserve heritage, including maintaining a list of World Heritage Sites, and programs to promote education in developing countries. UNESCO is about promoting our ideals and values through culture, education and science. Russia's foreign ministry said it regrets the decision, adding that the move would disrupt a number of important projects planned by UNESCO. At this time, conflicts continue to tear apart societies across the world. It is deeply regrettable for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations agency promoting education for peace and protecting culture under attack.
