As I near high school graduation and reflect on my career-related experiences, I have decided to pursue a career as a union electrician. A union electrician is tasked with Installing and maintain wiring, repairing and/or replacing wiring, following the National Electrical Code, inspecting electrical components for installation, and bending and installing conduit. Union electricians typically work out on a jobsite or inside a prefabrication shop. Union electricians usually work full time monday through friday and overtime is common and includes evenings and weekends. Being a union electrician is appealing to me for many reasons. Firstly because there will always be a need for electricians so I will always have a job. Second, the benefits are great and the pay is good coming in around $60,040. The first thing I did was a workshop class in ninth grade, which exposed me to basic circuits which I really enjoyed. Later I applied to go to C-TEC for Electrical Trades further exposing me to what an electrician does, I spent a lot of time learning and understanding the field. Through C-TEC I learned how to read electrical diagrams, as well as how to wire things according the the rules of the National Electrical Code. I also learned about the different types of conduit and their uses. Another thing I was exposed to during my schooling at C-TEC was different types of components that I would be working with out in the field. Near the end of my first year at C-TEC I got employed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 683 and started working the summer
