Introduction In this assignment P1, I will be describing the promotional mix used by both Apple and Nike for a selected product and service they provide. What is promotion? Promotion is a strategy used by many businesses. This strategy involves communication where businesses inform and introduce the different products and services they provide to customers, public around them and to anyone that has an interest in business. Businesses talk about the benefits of the products to customers and this helps to convince customers to buy the product. If the budget is large then they can use methods such as TV and radio. If it is a start-up business with a low marketing budget they will use methods such as newspapers and leaflets. Advertising Advertising is when there is involvement with mass media. This is where a business pays for information about itself to be published on billboards, posters, television, newspapers, magazines and many more. One advantage of advertising is that it introduces good products and services to people that could help make a difference in their lives. Another advantage is that advertising helps boost the number of sales within a business. More sales mean that companies can produce their products at cheaper production rate, hence this means they can afford to sell their products cheaper to customers which will be good as this will attract more customers to buy the product. One disadvantage of advertising is that it confuses the buyers. Consumers usually buy products that look good in advertisements. However, after seeing the item in real life make people feel as though the company has cheated them. This makes them think that the information given to them in advertisements about the product was not true due to them seeing differences in the product when it was right in front of them. Putting in a girl exercising with a pair of Nike trainers on helped boost sales for Nike as people actually considered buying the product due to it looking extremely good. The use of a broken car shows contrast between using running shoes as opposed to any other regular shoes. This shows that shoes built for a certain type of exercise will help you continually improve, while simultaneously keeping you healthy and injury free. The colour contrast between the clothes, which are vibrant compared to the dullness of the colour black, immediately attracts the eye to the clothes. This is especially effective as the background is also very dull. Personal Selling Personal selling involves speaking to customers face to face. This is usually done by a sales assistant to interact directly with their customers to meet their needs and to persuade them to buy their product. Examples of personal selling is buying and selling a car, buying electronics where there is direct conversation between the customer and sales person. One advantage of personal selling is that it is easier to persuade the customer to buy the product as the sales person can fully interact with the customers face to face by telling them about the product in more depth.
