Incarceration of citizens suffering with mental health issues is a problem in our U.S prisons and the justice system but there are solutions to this problem like offering different programs to the mentally ill. In the book Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson gives a glimpse of the cruel, unjust sentencing practices problems we have with our justice system. Our prisons are flooded with inmates who suffer from a mental illness and with correction officers who are not properly trained to handle inmates who suffer from this hidden illness.

Mass incarceration has been America’s response to poverty and mental illness. An estimated 40 percent of the mentally ill Americans end up in the criminal justice system. Around 2 million people with mental illness go to jail every year, that’s ten times more people in jail than in state funding psychiatric treatment.
Nevertheless, there are no studies that support the claim of confinement causing mental illness. If a person causes harm to any innocent victim for any reason and is convicted of the heinous crime(s) he or she should be sentenced
In the early 1800s the punishment of juveniles altered to the notion to rehabilitate juvenile offenders among with separate juveniles from adults in the system, and to keep the juvenile recidivism rate low, therefore the creation of the New York House of Refuge began (ABA Dialogue Program, n.d., p.5). The House of Refuge was the first prison to separate juveniles from adults and “were supposed to provide a home for unruly and troubled children, where they would be reformed, educated, and disciplined (Roberts, 1998, p. 96).” The program did not concentrate on punishment or pain, but on life skills that the juveniles could utilized once released. According to Roberts (1998), “Order, discipline, and moral teachings were emphasized (p.97).” The
Many jails and prisons now are trying to improve their care of prisoners with mental illness in order to adequately perform this assumed responsibility. However, past and current criminal justice policies and state laws too often hamper their ability to do so, sometimes because of a lack of resources or legal restrictions on the type of care they can provide. The Future I & II—Shifting Policies and Priorities Today, our criminal justice system has assumed the responsibility of caring for many of these individuals with mental illness as part of its core function despite having never been designed for the treatment of the mentally ill as a primary medical treatment provider. Some solutions proposed by the 2014 Treatment Advocacy Center and
There was a recent storm in Hollywood, Florida that left many homes without power. This storm also affected prisoners that were still kept in prisons that lacked of power, supplies, and plumbing during the emergency. This situation relates to The Eighth Amendment. Penal institutions in America are already over packed making it harder for the prison guards to look out for everyone. Mental diseases such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can make it hard to control for their thoughts and actions, which results in them committing malicious crimes, such as murder. But, these personas do not know that they are doing something terribly wrong. Because of this, they sometimes end up in prison. But with the insanity plea, the accused have a chance in defending themselves.
The prison system in Texas is its own and unique beast. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice or TDCJ has many different units that house many different types of inmates. These units across Texas all sever different purposes to the state and the local communities in which the prisons are close to. There are however three things that make each prison unique from the other prisons, the inmates that they house, and the different industries ran by the each prison and the programs offered to offenders. I work at the H.H. Coffield Unit and I will take you on a tour of that prison and explain what it is that make Coffield unique.
It’s October and you know what that means, Halloween is upon us. With Halloween around the corner the most popular activity to do is go to a haunted house. Curious teenagers, couples, families looking for a scare all attend haunted houses. And of course there is no other place you would go to in the tri-state area than Eastern Sate Penitentiary, a now national landmark and one time, operating prison.
The issue of prison overcrowding has been an increasing in America. There are about 2.2 million Americans in jail or prison. These people should be placed in rehabilitation centers or be counseled about drug distributing.
