Artifact 1: “Good vs. Evil”
Petitions, Protests, and Press Releases against President Obama and Success Story Narratives

For this section of the artifacts, I decided to find various articles demonstrating both the evil and the good that United We Dream showcases through different articles, press releases, presentations, and petitions. The articles are from 2012-present. Not all of the articles have a published date, therefore, the date is based on the archive where it was found online.

Evil: As I have made clear in many of the blog post entries, as well as with one of the interview questions that I asked to the organization activist, United We Dream seems to focus all of their attacks against President Barack Obama. Going through many of …show more content…

Many of these narratives which they not only showcase in their website newsroom, but also in their various social media platforms, are of students and the youth that have benefitted from DACA and in their stories, they talk about how their lives have changed thanks to DACA. One particular artifact that I want to bring attention to is a powerpoint presentation from 2014, which is two years after DACA was passed, that is titled “Owning the Dream”. Not only are feature stories showcased in this presentation, but there are also many statistics of just how DREAMers have been positively impacted. By presenting the success stories of many individuals throughout the years that DACA has been implemented, United We Dream is able to show not only those that are anti-immigrants, but also the government itself, especially those legislators who are trying to oppose the implementation of the program. Similarly, in the recent Supreme Court hearing of Texas v. United States, regarding the expansion of DACA to DACA+ and the approval of DAPA, United We Dream provided an Amicus brief in favor of the United States in which they also featured many success stories of many individuals who have attended higher education and are now productive members of society, or they are head of households who are helping their families have a place to sleep and eat. The narratives of individuals allow for the creation of credibility. If the program was not working, then there would not be as many success stories from those individuals that are benefitting from them. At the same time, these stories are battling the negative stereotypes that are set about the undocumented immigrant community, such as the ideas that many of them are lazy, or they are criminals, or that they only want to take advantage of the social benefits that the government offers, and replacing them with good role model examples.
