Unity of the Freaks The film, Freaks, is based off of the short story “Spurs” by Tod Robbins. While both the short story and film are similar in many ways the overall themes differ. That being said the film, Freaks, does a better job of portraying the directors intended theme. Tod Browning was hired by MGM studios to create “the ultimate horror film.” This film took root with real developmentally and physically disabled veterans of freak shows.Given that Browning at the young age of sixteen ran away from home and joined the circus had no problem working with such cast members and sympathised with them rather than looked down upon them, because of this Browning portrays an overall theme of unity of the freaks and defending your own kind …show more content…

Shortly after Hans drinks the tampered wine the freaks sitting around the table begin to chant, “Gooble gooble, one of use” as they each drink out of a goblet filled with what is presumably wine. When the goblet is presented to Cleo she quickly declines the drink and begins to shout that she is not and never will be a freak (Source A). Cleo is not successful in poisoning Hans and begins to administer additional doses of poison to him in his medicine; however, by this time Hans has caught on to what is happening and spits the medicine out when she is not looking. In the end as the circus is moving onto the next city the freaks gather together to punish Cleo for attempting to murder one of their own, Hans. When they successful catch Cleo the camera pans out and the next scene shows Cleo as deformed-human chicken (Source D). In conclusion, director Tod Browning portrays the theme of defending your own kind when the freaks unite to deliver justice to Cleo. The freaks defend and support each other showing they are not competing to be better than one another, rather they support each other's differences. The film Freaks is brilliantly written and performed truly showing that personal differences do not equal
