Government is a social construct that has been theorized about and changed over the years. Many ideas have come into existence about the meaning and purpose of government. However, one theme has remained constant in every interpretation; safety. The protection of rights is important in every society. In modern times, there is a document called The Universal Declaration of Human Right which details the rights every citizen deserves. It is the job of the government to protect these rights to their highest ability. The purpose of government is to uphold the terms of the Universal Declaration of Human Right. The General Duty Clause states that “each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees” ("UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR"). This act upholds the fifth article of the Universal Declaration of Human Right, which states that no one shall be tortured or treated inhumanely ("Universal Declaration of Human Rights"). In 2013, Tyson Foods incorrectly trained an employee and his hand was severed by an unguarded conveyor belt ("UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR"). The government fined the company $147,000 and mandated regulated inspections. Also, if at any point they have reasonable cause, they may enter and inspect the facility to check for violations. This intervention by OSHA prevented more injuries at the facility and protected workers from future incidents. Thus, OSHA played a part in protecting their rights as American citizens.
