Today there are more than 32.5 million people in the world who have been forced to flee from their homes to escape violence or war (Google.com). In this Essay, I search for the truth of what all these people have in common and what the universal refugee experience is. Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their homes in search of an escape from violence, Ethnic Cleansing, or in search of Religious freedom. The book Inside Out and Back Again follows a Vietnamese girl named Ha. As she navigates through her difficult life as a refugee of the Vietnam War. After hours of research, I believe the universal refugee experiences two things, The difficulty of finding a new home, and the challenge of adapting to a new routine and environment. One of the first challenges refugees face is the difficulty adapting to a new environment. This can be experienced in many ways like struggling to learn a language or routine. One refugee was quoted saying “Now I live in an apartment with my parents and siblings. We sleep in different rooms and the evenings are quieter”.
