Slave homes were not supplied with the accommodations of their slave-owners. The housing that slaves resided in lacked features conducive to healthy living, slave’s homes were usually crowded with several generations residing in a small area on dirt floors. In addition, they were not supplied with outhouses instead they would often dig ditches (latrines) to handle urinary and bowel movements, which could contaminate water. Food preparation was also done in unsanitary conditions. Although slaves were provided with weekly rations of food that was thought to be sufficient for survival they were severely malnourished as their diet lacked in vitamin c, calcium, protein, iron and other essential minerals even after they added fruits, vegetables,
