Unsolved Mystery Research Paper Amelia Earhart 10/15/17 Natalie Koranda On June 1st, 1937, Amelia Earhart, took off in Oakland, California for her next journey. This was her second attempt to become the first pilot in history to circumnavigate the globe. Flying in a twin engine Lockheed 10E Electra and accompanied by navigator Fred Noonan, the two flew to their first destination which was Miami, Florida, and onto the next in South America. They crossed the Atlantic to Africa, then east to India and Southeast Asia. It was later discovered that Earhart and Noonan left important communication and navigation instruments, possibly to have more room for fuel on the long flight. July 2nd was the last time Earhart was seen alive. Her and her partner lost radio contact with the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca, a bit off the coast of Howland Island. Soon, Franklin D. Roosevelt who was the president at the time, authorized a two-week search for the two. They were declared lost at sea after the two-week long, massive search.
