I chose Urban Outfitters, because out of all the examples, Urban Outfitters was the least corporate and I wanted to choose something interesting. Their statement is as follows: “Lifestyle merchandising is our business and our passion. The goal for our brands is to build a strong emotional bond with the customer. To do this we must build lifestyle environments that appeal emotionally, and offer fashion correct products on a timely basis. Our customers are the reason and inspiration for everything we do.” (1, 2015) This statement shows that besides what Urban Outfitters is known for, clothing, it really wants to focus on Lifestyle Merchandising. When I went to the Urban Outfitters website, it was hard to find a direct “About us” page, due to the online store they have as their main website. I found two separate sites with an “About us” tab. The first was on the company’s job page, where they gave an elaborated history of the company. The second on the company’s corporate website, which gives more of an overview of the products, and stores owned by Urban Outfitters. Now the first site is interesting, because it shows that if you want to work for Urban Outfitters, even if it is just in the stores, they want you to know what the company stands for. They want you to carry the same passion, and strive for the same ultimate goal as Urban Outfitters does. An example from their “About” page: “Today, Urban Outfitters is still driven by culture, music, art, design, style, and community. We’re a creatively-led company that is as much inspired by our customers as we inspire them, creating experiential retail spaces, curated product assortments, and continuously growing an exciting community of creative, influential people.
