For my constellation, I chose Ursa Major, or the "Big Dipper." The reason for this is because it has always been one of my favorite constellations. I can almost always see it in the sky where I live. It also means a lot to me as one of my friends from childhood who had passed away, had one of those stars named after him. I always think of him when I look at it. The star in the constellation Megrez, is the star that is named after him. This constellation is made up of seven stars: Dubhe, Merak, Phecda, Aloith, Alcor also know as Mizar, and Akaid. Both the Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor go around Polaris, the north star. Every twenty-three hours and fifty-six minutes they make a full revolution around that star. This one is the Greek creation myths. Long ago, the great god Zeus had changed the nymph Callisto into a bear to hide her from his wife Hera. However, everything has consequences. Zeus had realized the mistake as he remembered that his son Actas, is a hunter. So, to keep his mother safe, Zeus had decided to place the both of them in the sky as the constellations Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. Other names known for these are Big Bear and Little Bear, as well as the Big and Little Dipper.
