U.S. Entry into World War 1 There are so many interesting things about World War 1 like all of the battles that took place in the middle of the war. There were all of these countries that were in it and how it changed history. But the number one question is why or how did the U.S. get involved in world War? The United States entered World War 1 because the sinking of the Lusitania, the Zimmerman Telegram, and the Sussex Pledge. On May 7, 1915, a U-boat from Germany sank a ship called the Lusitania, killing 1200, including 128 Americans. This devastating event had angered the U.S., calling Germany’s act “barbarism.” U.S. wasn’t too mad because Germany even stated to the world that they would sink any ship that comes into European waters. After the sinking of the Lusitania, U-boats continued attacking allied merchant ships. That’s where the Zimmerman telegram comes in. As another reason why the U.S entered the war was because of a telegram that was intercepted by the British, made by Arthur Zimmerman that was on its way to Mexico. When translated, this telegram told Mexico to declare war on the U.S., and if so, Germany would reward Mexico with American land. The British quickly told the U.S. that Germany told Mexico to attack the United States. The British told U.S. about the telegram to get the U.S. into the war so that the U.S. could help the Allies since the U.S. has the best military army. Mexico did not agree with Germany’s plan. In fact Mexico also told the U.S. that, Germany wanted Mexico to attack the U.S., but Mexico did not because Mexico knows that they would lose against the U.S. and that the U.S. has more fire power.
