The United States in World War I On April 6th, 1917, a hundred years ago, the United States of America formally declared war on Germany and joined the Allies, formed by Britain, Russia, and France to fight the Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria, in a war that became known as the World War I, but at the time was known as The Great War. During most of World War I, which started on July 28 of 1914 after the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian Gavrilo Princip, the United States maintained an isolationist stance.
