The United States in World War I On April 6th, 1917, a hundred years ago, the United States of America formally declared war on Germany and joined the Allies, formed by Britain, Russia, and France to fight the Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria, in a war that became known as the World War I, but at the time was known as The Great War. The Germans began to attack vessels that supplied food and weapons to England, and in this tactic, the Germans eventually destroyed American ships, most notably the passenger ship Lusitania in 1915, killing 1,201 people, including 128 Americans. Each involved country played an important role in winning the war for the Allies. In fact, the US military was not that well trained and prepared to fight the war, with many of the men being inexperienced, and it required training from French and British officials.
