The liberal or interdependence theory is a very interesting theory to use when examining the nature of the US-Japan relation. The theory argues that the cooperation between the US and Japan is historically inevitable and this cooperation is a result of a harmony of interests, resulting in mutual benefits for both states. This aspect of the theory is applicable to the current relation and can be seen in Japan becoming less problematic to the US as China displaced Japan as the greatest perceived economic threat to the U.S. Also, the alliance is based on shared vital interests and values, including the political stability in the Pacific region, the promotion of the economic and political freedoms of both states, and support for human rights, and democratic institutions in both countries. In addition, the liberal theory argues that the non-state cooperation between both states, represented in their bilateral membership in international organization, play a crucial role in maintaining the strong connection. This applicable to the US-Japan relation as Japan and the US belong to a number of the same international organizations; “In January 2016, Japan began its two year role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Also in 2016 Japan assumed the presidency of the G7 and hosted ten ministerial meetings during the year as well as the May 2016 G7 Leaders’ Summit” (Japan). Another assumption of this theory is that the powerful economic connection and trade between the United States and Japan reduce conflict. This can be clearly seen in the Us economic policy towards Japan that strives for magnifying access to Japan’s markets; at the same time “Japan represents a major market for many U.S. goods and services, including agricultural products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, films and music, [etc.]”.
