The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, is a novel about Katniss Everdeen, who volunteers to participate in the 74th annual Hunger Games. The event held by the Capitol, is a game in which there are 24 tributes and you must try and survive. Collins has depicted Katniss as one of the main heroic characters. The author uses many different techniques to show how heroic Katniss really is. The author depicts Katniss as someone who displays strengths like selflessness and sacrifice. One of the techniques that Collins uses to depict the characteristics of Katniss is sacrifice. There is an example of sacrifice when Prim was chosen to be the tribute so Katniss, trying to find a way to save Prim, volunteers for her sister. “I volunteer”, i gasp, “i volunteer as tribute”. You are able to see this technique when Katniss, Peeta and Cato are the last 3 tributes left in the games so Katniss and Peeta attempt to kill Cato. Katniss shoots Cato in the hand and peeta lets go of cato as he falls down to the pack of wolves. Unfortunately Cato doesn’t immediately die, to save Cato from a painful death Katniss shoots him to stop him from suffering in pain. This is just one example of the many in which is she shows Mercy. The second example where mercy is seen is in Thresh a tribute from district 11. In this scene Thresh shows mercy towards Katniss when he overhears Clove taunting Katniss about Rue the other tribute from district 12, Thresh is appalled and mad at the actions of Clove as he thinks Clove is the one that killed Rue. He runs towards Katniss and drags Clove to the Cornucopia where he bangs he head against the building denting her skull, which after a short time kills her.
