In Animal Farm Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky represents Snowball, and Farmer Jones represents Czar Nicholas II. George Orwell managed to take the events of the Russian Revolution, and turn them into a story that people could read for all ages.

How Satire Connects with Day-to-Day Living in Society What exactly is satire? Well, satire is the use of humor or irony to criticize or mock the people’s knowledge or vices. Mark Twain makes use of satire in his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a telling of a boy named Huckleberry Finn and his daily adventures through his boyhood near the Mississippi River.
Satire is defined by the usage of various literary devices, such as irony, puns, and backwards logic, to criticize and poke fun at contemporary issues. Satire is commonly used to make a statement about society from the authors’ point of view. Two classical satirical works are Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and Voltaire’s Candide. Wilde was an author who used backwards logic and frivolity extensively to attack his targets, while Voltaire was a philosopher who used sarcasm and brutal imagery against his.
Satire is a genre of literature, often used as a social commentary, and sometimes is in performing arts and graphic skits. Satire uses vices, follies, abuses, shortcomings and irony to ridicule bad habits in society. People often use satire to pick at a topic or bad problem to make you think and then take action. After reading satire, it should make you think about the given issue and give you a certain view on something, usually towards the author's view. Satire should leave an emotional effect on you over the topic, or issue, that makes you maybe want to change something to fix said issue.
When first reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one might assume it to be a simple narrative about Farm Animals. However, through closer analysis, you begin to see the allegorical connections and satire of the work. By drawing parallels to certain major events and individuals from the Russian Revolution, Orwell is able to provide a political commentary about the harsh conditions caused by the Revolution. “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, is a story to show how absolute power corrupts, just as Stalin’s power did during the Russian Revolution in 1917. In the allegory “Animal Farm” each character represents a political figure from the days around the Russian Revolution. For example, Joseph Stalin is represented by a pig named Napoleon, Squealer, another pig, represents Stalin’s propaganda department, and the dogs represent the Secret Police (KBG). Using the nine dogs that Napoleon raises (intimidation), Squealer (propaganda), and manipulation, Orwell illustrates how Napoleon was able to gain and maintain control of the farm. The nine dogs that stay by Napoleon at all times are useful for Napoleon to gain and maintain control of the farm because they scare the other animals, intimidating them so that they do not disobey Napoleon.
Stalin, the leader of the Communist army in Russia and the most powerful man in the past uses violence to the ones that go against him. He has a style of dictatorship where many people suffer. Gunshots going across, people dying out, outcry, burst in tears with bruises all over the body, killing in harsh condition all occurs during Russian Revolution. The historical background of George Orwell’s Animal Farm is also the Russian Revolution. In the book, Napoleon uses dictatorship to order other animals, uses accuration, and give harsh punishment who block his way.
