We could get their nukes in Cuba with our nukes, but they have more nukes to get us and we have plenty more to get them. It sounds like the games we used to play as kids” (Kurlansky 90).
In the book The Butter Battle Book, by Dr. Seuss, between two different communities of people with different beliefs lays a wall. On one side of the wall live the Yooks who eat their bread butter side up. On the other side of the wall live the Zooks who eat their bread butter side down. The book is a satire of the Cold War, which took place from 1947-1991.This book is better than other satires because it gives the reader a clear story about what the satire is really about and uses many devices to help with the satirization. Throughout the story, Dr. Seuss uses conflict, parody, and reversal to demonstrate the reality of the Cold War.
1. Irony as we talked about in class is considered to be intellectual or a sort of dry humor. It also has a double meaning, where you say one thing but the opposite meaning is implied. For example, in the reading “SantaLand Diaries” David and another elf realized that Santa is an anagram of Satan. So they would substitute the word for Santa by using Satan in front of customers.
One example of satire in “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez would be the secretary asking for a Mexican-American. When the secretary first comes in she say “As I was starting to say, I’m a secretary from Governor Reagan’s office, and we’re looking for a Mexican type for the administration,”(p. 1292) but that's not really what she was looking for. What she was looking for was a person who looks, acts, and speaks American but has Mexican blood in them. It’s proven when she had denied the revolucuionario model because it was “made” in Mexico.

For example, one way he shows satire is in the beginning of the prompt he says “country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism”(Twain). Twain is showing how the soldiers were ready for war that even their chest was on fire because of how much patriotism they had. When soldiers go to war I don't think there breast burned them for feeling patriotic. This shows how ironic he is because that didn't really happen. Twain trys to explain to the people how the soilders were so happy to go fight and knew they were going to win
Catch 22 is juvenilia satire book written by well recognized American author, Joseph Heller. Throughout the book Heller makes statements on society using satirical elements and one of them is power. This is recognized throughout the book by characters, characterization, and satire. That power can be overused and misused without people noticing or unable to stop it, which at the end there is no control from no one.

Some things it’s embedded into is cartons, playwrights, movies, passages, jokes, etc. The play “The Acharnians” by Aristophanes and “The Word- Armistice” by Stephen Colbert uses satire and has several similarities and differences. “The Acharnians” by Aristophanes is a play that involves a lot of hilarious satire.

Voltaire’s Candide takes us through the life and development of Candide, the protagonist. Throughout his adventures, he witnesses many travesties and sufferings. Like many Enlightenment philosophers, Pangloss, Candide’s tutor, is an optimist; this philosophy was adopted by many to help mask the horrors of the eightieth century. Pangloss teaches Candide that everything happens for a reason. Voltaire uses satire, irony and extreme exaggerations to poke fun at many aspects; such as optimism, religion, corruption, and social structures within Europe.

Satire is a great tool especially in real-world issues, it is a very clever way to inform people while also challenging them to reflect and maybe even reconsider popular or even not so popular ideas.
