Using Dendrochronology To Determine The Growth Of A Tree

Trees rings are rings within the trunk of the tree. A method that scientist use to analysis the pattern of the growth of a tree is known as Dendrochronology. The way that tree rings are produced, is during growth season the trunk grows thicker that produces a new layer of wood (United States Environmental Protection Agency). Paleoclimatologist use tree-rings to analysis the climate changes and the health of the forest or the environment around it. Each of the rings is consist with a year of growth and tell scientist how long the tree has been around. Scientist determines if the tree had a good growth rate by looking at the thickness of the rings. If the ring is thin then there that most likely means that there wasn’t a lot of growth, which means that it could be a number of things that prevent the growth of the tree such as not a lot of precipitation, or just simply a period of droughts. Trees have many basic patterns of growth such as in conifers reproductive cambium cells form large, thin-walled earlywood tracheid during primarily serve …show more content…

It is known as the segment length curse, which makes it hard to use the tree-ring to determine age (McCarroll and Loader). Using tree-rings to look at the history of the climate is pretty difficult because there could be many misinterpretations with tree-rings. One thing that has to be taken into consideration when observing tree-rings is the impact that carbon dioxide might have on the growth of the tree. The second thing scientist have to take into consideration when interpreting is the method of tree-ring standardization. It is a statistical procedure that may inadvertently bias the resulting temperature interpretations, either positively or negatively, if done incorrectly
