Back and back and back.” ( Lowry 68 ) An utopia is an imagined place or state of things in which it’s perfect and the same/no differences . Jonas the protagonist , lives in a world that is full of sameness and perfection , everything is directed by instructors with authority . There is no such thing as decision making , choices , and differences within his society . The Giver by Lois Lowry is a captivating novel explaining through the protagonist eyes life living in a utopia . First , you will be assigned a job/career in Jonas’s society that is the best fit for you from Chief Of Elders opinions . Considering in the story , it also states “Like the Matching of Spouses and the Naming and placement of newchild , the Assignments scrupulously thought through by the Committee of Elders .” (48) This defiantly shows that community careless about idividualism , since you are not granted to choose their future job/career , because in this society the Chief of Elders select your future job for you . On the other hand , nobody assigns a job/career in modern day for somebody , the person is allowed to pick for which job they’re are interested in and as well how many jobs they’ll have . Compared to Jonas’s society it is much different . The Committee of Elders make sure that the Assignment is the perfect fit for you , without you having no say towards the decision . Regarding to what Jonas thoughts , “ He was certain that his Assignment , whatever it was to be , and Asher’s too , would be the right one for them” (51). This is so far another way Jonas’s society sets up job/career , considering that the community handles everything . Finally , that there is no say for the assignment , there is also no decision on when the community will start sceduling work at a young age . In the story , Lowry strongly described on how the society wanted sameness , and no differences . Compared to today’s environment , there is no limit for how many members there is in an family . Also , another rule/law in Jonas society is nobody that lives in the community are not allowed to brag or lie in . For example , Jonas mentions , “ There was never any comfortable way to mention or discuss one’s successes without breaking the rule against bragging , even if you didn’t mean too” (27) . Also , comparing it to today’s society with Jonas , there is no law/rule instructing somebody to not lie , brag , and ect. In another way , explaining Jonas’s society strictness would be , once a child is an eight in the community : he/she granted freedom of choice once you are an eight or above .
