The film V for Vendetta shows many different sides of the human condition with its array of contrasting characters. Most prominent of theses human experiences is that of vengeance. It shows the disastrous consequences one faces when taking the law into one’s own hands. As well as showing all of the personal sacrifices that this can entail. The movie is the story of an unknown masked vigilante simply known as V. His mission throughout the movie is to not only get revenge on those who wronged him monstrously but to change their corrupt and oppressing government. V wears a Guy Fawkes mask because he sees the Gun Powder Plot of the 1600s as one of the most important days in history. It also shows them doing almost the same thing but in different places. This shows how they are similar yet very different. It was important how they were set up as foils so early on because throughout the movie you see how they react differently in the same situations. Also multiple times throughout the film Eveys face is placed in rack focus to show the depth of her emotions and how they are important to the film. It is important to notice the big differences between Every and V’s attitude to their lives. They both had reasons to be bitter and want revenge on the government, V because of the experiments they did on him and Every with the murder of her brother and parents. Even with this shared experience they both took different paths. V loses himself in his vengeance and sacrifices everything including his life. Evey on the other hand, continues with her life normally after her parents death. Even though she lives with grief and sadness she makes a life for herself, has a job, an apartment, and aspirations. Her life only changes to a path of revenge when V enters her
