In the novel “Hate List”, Valerie Leftman is to return to school five months after her boyfriend, Nick shot several fellow classmates in the school cafeteria. Most of the people shot were on a list Valerie and Nick made and called the hate list. A majority of the school community believes that Valerie was aware of Nick’s plan to kill the kids (she wasn’t aware) despite the fact that Valerie saved someone’s life and got shot in the process. In “Hate List”, Valerie and everyone around her must pick up the broken pieces of fear and sadness after the tragedy. This creates a story that is both universal and so unique that it will leave the reader changed on a fundamental level. Doubt is something that instilled into Valerie’s mindset and dynamic. Throughout the story she questions herself and her ability to overcome obstacles which shows us how much of a doubtful person she is. Evidence of this is when she states “Was I the bad guy who set into motion the plan to mow down half my school or the hero who sacrificed herself to end the killing?” This shows that Valerie is doubtful; she can’t figure out her role in the situation and doesn’t trust herself enough to know what her intents were. Valerie proves to be a doubtful person when she reveals that she doesn’t know who she is and can’t identify herself as a person. This shows she’s doubtful because she’s not certain of who she is and what she presents. Another part where Valerie shows that she is a doubtful person is when she says “Was I safe? Was there really a time I might have been suicidal and I didn’t even know it?” This demonstrates how doubtful Valerie is, she isn’t able to grasp her feelings or register what her reactions mean or say about her.
