With the help of many artist and the famous vallenato festival, all 4 styles of vallenato, Puya, Merengue, Paseo and son reached international recognition while simultaneously displaying cultural pride. Vallenato puya is one of the oldest style of vallenato and is characterized as being in triple meter with few lyrics. Its fast paced is meant to show off the virtuosity of the accordion. Vallenato paseo is one the most popular style that derived from vallenato son. It is associated with a couple’s dance, romantic lyrics and is composed at a slower pace than paseo. Artist like Carlos Vives tremendously pushed vallenato music to international recognition by incorporating vallenato elements into a more modern, pop vallenato.This demonstrated cultural pride in the sense that Vives uses vallenato elements with a hint of pop to preserve the essence if vallenato. Lastly, there is vallenato son, which is similar to paseo but is in duple meter with a nostalgically and plaintive mood. Artist such as Jorge Celedon and Fanny Lu help spread vallenato both son and paseo through songs that became big hits internationally and gained attention from outside of Colombia.
