Robo-readers are computerized tools intended to supplement human effort in the domains of teaching, tutoring and even grading students’ work. The technology is not new. Various attempts to develop such tools started in the 60s. With the advent of cheap computing power, the initial rudimentary experiments, evolved into very sophisticated, specialized tools. Today they are used successfully in the schools as teaching aids, as well as in other areas such as medicine, assisting doctors in their interactions with patients, and training new employees in business and government offices. The opinions vary with the most heated debates revolving around the use of the robo-readers for grading students’ papers. In the article “Robo-readers aren’t .....”, Annie Murphy Paul [*] quotes Mark D. Shermis, dean at University of Akron, which indicates that, in his research, robo-readers performed at par with human readers in evaluating student writing. Presenting a diametrically opposing opinion, Annie Murphy Paul quotes Les Perlman, former director of writing at MIT, which states that robo-readers are incapable of grading students’ works since they do not evaluate meaning but only form. The opinions are less divergent when discussing robo-reader’s value as a learning, training tool. Studies conducted by professors at several universities demonstrate the positive impact of robo-readers on students’ quality of writing. Reporting on the follow-up interviews with the students using robo-readers, these studies identified student’s change in behaviour in response to immediate, personalized and non-judgmental evaluations and recommendations of the computerized tool. The students feel more comfortable to receive and accept criticism from a machine than from a human reviewer. This stimulated the students to use the tool, implement the suggestions and ultimately improve on their writing
