My involvement with the IMPACT organization exemplifies my potential in upholding the honor code as its interests encompass the same values of the code. IMPACT is a student organization at the University of Georgia that offers a week-long, substance free, service-learning opportunity with a social justice focus at both winter and spring breaks to engage students to understand the value of service and their potential to serve others to enact change upon the world. With a co-site leader, I was tasked with duties that included scheduling every event from departure to return, coordinating forty hours of service for approximately twenty students, securing local support for housing and meals, and budgeting groceries for the entire week for the group among many duties. As the student-leader, I engaged my fellow students to introspectively analyze themselves to understand the purpose of service: to serve the needs of a community while respecting their cultural norms. The primary role of a site-leader, I believe, is to challenge their peers to understand the value of service as the site-leaders have already learned themselves. Site-leaders do not aim to change anyone's morals but to enlighten the participants by raising the awareness of the participants' potentials in whatever works they may possible do in the future. To lead other participants, site-leaders must offer a safe space that welcomes differences and maintain self-discipline to not exert their own biases. Sharing our unique human experiences, we became aware of our privileges and the ability to extend these powers to others during our reflections, which is uniquely different for every single IMPACT trip. Through service, everyone grows by learning about their focus, community, and ultimately themselves.
