The values and efforts maintained throughout debate with states’ rights played a significant role and factor when leading toward the causation of the Civil War. Advocating states’ rights included believing that individual states should have the authority to decide on issues revolving around slavery, tariffs, and matters involving interference from the federal government; while others believed a strong central government should be established. Essentially developing the tension between the newly divided sides: the Union (north), and the Confederacy (south). The South valued agriculture, producing about 15% of the nation’s manufactured goods, with cash crops including tobacco, rice, sugar, and cotton. By the 1850’s cotton provided about two-thirds of America’s exports and then tied the South directly to Great Britain. Leading toward a strong opposition to tariffs, the South felt they increased the cost of goods they needed and harmed their economy. This cotton boom essentially created a reliance upon slaves and an increase in overall numbers. The South was now measured in land and the number of slaves owned. This increase, mainly through reproduction, included the smuggling of slaves regardless of federal regulations. Creating an overall slave dominance, making up as much as 75% of the total population. Whereas, the South’s economy relied heavily on the production of cash crops, making them dependent upon slave labor. They also held a more rural environment with a rigid social hierarchy where plantation owners held most all power over enslaved individuals. Due to the great urbanization, creating a more diverse population full of immigrants in search of jobs. There was a strong influence of education and reform movements at the onset throughout the North too. They did not rely on slave labor, rather on manufacturing, shipping, and trade instead. They facilitated transportation and communication throughout railroads and canals, full of a much more diversified population/economy. The differences between the North and South through economic, social, and political factors, created a strong division that led to the conflict known as the Civil War. States’ rights played a strong role in creating division between the North and South prior to the Civil War. It amplified and intensified the tension in the already established differences within values. This issue could have been solved in a more appropriate way.
